Why Prototyping Matters in Robotics

What is Robotics Prototyping?
Prototyping in the realm of robotics involves the creation of an initial, functional model of your robotic concept. It’s not about designing a flawless, market-ready product right away; rather, it’s about developing a basic prototype with essential functionalities. This prototype serves as the foundation upon which you’ll build and refine your robotic project.

Why Should You Prototype Your Robot?
Prototyping breathes life into your project, offering a functional model of your robotic vision. It’s essential for concept evaluation, securing grant funding, and is a common practice across various industries. A working robot prototype provides numerous advantages:

1. Shorter Development Time: Immediate issue testing and resolution without guesswork.
2. Reduced Cost: Minimizes rounds of discussion, saving time and money.
3. More Clarity: Offers transparency, aiding communication and understanding.
4. Accurate Requirements and Research: Enhances precision in project details.
5. Increased Speed to Market: Accelerates development and research.
6. Foundation for Financial Support: Attracts investors with a tangible prototype.
7. Competitive Edge: Outperforms theoretical concepts in a competitive landscape.
8. Faster Patents: Expedites patenting in competitive environments.

How to Execute Robotics Prototyping

Embarking on a successful robotics prototyping journey involves several key steps

1. Ideas Are Cheap: Create a working prototype that accurately represents your idea.
2. Don’t Optimize for Cost: Focus on rapid development and efficiency.
3. Reconfigurable I/O: Streamline the integration of sensors and I/O devices.
4. Design for Reuse: Plan for future iterations and reusability.
5. Keep Learning: Document your progress for future reference.

The outer design of an electric three-finger robot hand
The hand, motor, and controller are integrated into one unit, allowing for gripping force, operating speed, and position control using a servo system with a stepper motor. This product achieves a firm and precise grip on a variety of objects.
Supporting Unprecedented Air Purifier Innovation with ARRK's Expertise
We worked on the exterior design, engineering, and prototyping of the air purifier conceived by Hitachi, Ltd. Research and Development Group.
Power Assist Suit for Caregiving J-PAS fleairy
We assisted in the design for the mass production of the lightweight power assist suit "J-PAS fleairy," which is designed to reduce the strain on the lower back during caregiving tasks. This suit detects movements and adjusts the assistive force, providing a strong sense of assistance. It features a belt winding system for weight reduction.
Transfer support robot Hug L1
ARRK assisted with the design of FUJI Corporation's transfer support robot, Hug L1. This robot is designed to support movements between seated positions, such as transferring from a bed to a wheelchair or a wheelchair to the restroom, as well as assisting with standing in dressing rooms in caregiving settings.
Hitachi, Ltd. Research and Development Group
ARRK collaborated with Hitachi's Research and Development Group to incorporate UV functionality into their air purifier. This innovative air purifier can effectively disinfect even hard-to-reach areas like the undersides of desks and chairs by irradiating them with UV light. Its compact size allows it to maneuver easily in tight spaces, providing thorough air purification.
JTEKT Corporation
ARRK provided total support, from redesigning existing products to design, prototyping, and mass production, for J-TEKT's power assist suit "J-PAS LUMBUS." This suit is designed to reduce the burden on the lower back in various work environments and features control technology developed by J-TEKT in electric power steering, along with a mechanism that can harmonize with human movement, allowing it to adapt to a wide range of tasks.
